    Description

1940 Hetchins Brilliant Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, curly stays,Camrock.
You have seen this same bike listed as a competition.  After checking with the historian through the Hetchins website, we now believe it is a Brilliant.
H22321 is listed in the sales ledgers as a 22-inch curly frame,
without a model designation, but is certainly some sort of Brilliant.
Please see the 1940 catalog for more information on the models
    available in that year:
    http://www.hetchins.org/303-catalog-1939-40.htm
Yours was first sold on 18 March 1940 to Francis Southall, price 8
pounds 15 shillings. Yours was produced in the second month of 1940
(hence, the first 2), and was the two thousand three hundred
twenty-first frame made since they started counting in Aug 1935 (the
    trailing 4 digits).

This Bike was last ridden by it's owner, noted cycling advocate, author of cycling guide books, Wisconsin cycling hall of fame inductee and co-founder of among other rides the Chequamagon fat Tire festival., Phil Van Valkenberg.  Phil road it in the 80 mile 2013 Lake Pepin 3 speed tour. Since his stroke in 2014, Phil is riding a tandem recumbent tricycle.  He is donating this and two other of his vintage bikes to raise money to construct a paved connector trail from his home town of Cambridge WI to the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. All proceeds from the sale will go to support trail construction.  The bike is fully functional  but not entirely original.  The seat bag, Sturmey Archer Hub, Brakes and seat post are period but not original. Frame paint would require restoration to be pristine.  Phil says its "a wonderful ride with quick handling.
The number H22321 on the steering tube means the frame was produced in February  of 1940 and was the 2321 one produced since #1 was produced in 1935. Here is a link to the Hetchins site for verification http://www.hetchins.org/302b.htm  Scroll down to the paragraph starting with 1940.
