From a private WWII museum collection of over 20 years, featuring all types of original WWII period clothing, equipment and assorted military pieces, as well as a variety of reproduction items, uniforms, equipment, and European military surplus.  All items have been part of a variety of WWII displays. This private WWII museum collection is being sold off.   The following item is offered for sale  –

MY DAD SPENT OVER 30+ YEARS BUILDING HIS AMAZING WWII COLLECTION.
AT ONE POINT IT TOOK
UP 5 ROOMS IN HIS HOUSE.  EVENTUALLY THE ENTIRE COLLECTION WENT INTO STORAGE FOR SOME 10 YEARS, AND WE HAVE BEEN SLOWLY SELLING OFF THE ENTIRE COLLECTION THESE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
WE TAKE A FEW BOXES OUT OF STORAGE AT A TIME

THESE WERE SPECIALLY REPRODUCED BY A ZIPPO
DEALER IN CA. BACK IN 2003 .. ME & MY BROTHER
DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THESE.
MY DAD INFORMED US, THAT AT THE TIME HE
BOUGHT THE 2 SPECIAL EDITION ZIPPO BLACK
CRACKLE LIGHTER ZIPPO SETS BACK IN JAN. 2003
AND THE DEALER WAS INCLUDING A SPECIAL
RE-PRINT OF THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET,
MY DAD ASKED IF HE COULD GET ANY MORE OF
THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS, AND AMAZINGLY,
THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE HIM WITH

The history of the Zippo Black Crackle Lighter & the success of the Zippo Manufacturing Company itself
is inseparably connected to World War II. When on Sunday, December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and suddenly the United States of America was thrust into War.
Of course this had an immediate economical & operational effect on the nationwide industy.
All the grade one steel & brass were needed for the machinery of war and the Zippo Mfg. Co. had to use what was available, which were secondary more porous grades of steel for their production instead.   Chrome and nickel used by Zippo to plate their casings were no longer available due to War Dept. production priorities and secondary metals used found early 1942 Zippo lighters starting to corrode from humidity.
So born out of necessity in order to maintain high quality standards, in June=July of 1942 cases began to be coated with a heavier powder coated black paint, which was then baked for curing, which resulted in a crinkly surface coating, later to become known as the black crackle finish.
Soon after Zippo’s entire production output was designated by the US Govt. for use and priority issue to American Armed Forces worldwide, and Zippo lighters were no longer available for civilian sales.  All Zippo lighters now made in the new Black Crackle finish were being shipped to depots, post exchanges & navy ships everywhere US forces served, and all civilian sales were immediately stopped, which was stated in nationwide newspaper ads from 1942 through late 1945.
Regarding the company's output the production numbers exploded. The Army Quatermaster Corps ordered Zippo lighters in 500.000 & 1.000.000 unit lots. It took 10 years to reach the milestone of 1.000.000 produced Zippo lighters in 1942. Within the next 5 years this number had multiplied tenfold.
From 1942-1945 the WWII Zippo Black Crackle Lighter was shipped in a specially designed light tan colored cardboard box. Zippo added the Zippo Brand info to the front of the cardboard box in black ink, though collections & history also show that both blue & red ink were used in limited numbers.  The back of the boxes were left blank.   Additionally included inside the box, with the lighter, Zippo included a specially designed Instruction booklet insert that was a 2 page front & back directions insert on how to use, service & care for your Zippo Lighter.  This specially designed WWII instruction insert was used only between 1942-45, and changed after WWII.  Like original WWII Zippo Black Crackle lighters, the instruction inserts remain very rare on the collector market today.
